A small muscle connected to each hair follicle and the skin. When contracted, it causes the hair to stand up (a phenomenon known as ‘goosebumps’). The muscle’s contraction also plays a role in the secretion of sebum from the sebaceous glands, which helps to condition and protect the hair and scalp.
